The Elora & Salem Horticultural Society has been bringing gardeners together since 1850, making it the oldest horticultural society in Ontario and one of the oldest community organizations in Elora.

Founded by a small group of passionate gardeners, merchants, and community leaders, the Society was established at a time when organized horticulture was still a novelty in Canada. In 1850, Elora was a village of only 400 residents, yet local gardening enthusiasts recognized the value of sharing knowledge, exchanging plants and seeds, and working together to improve both their gardens and their community.

The Society quickly inspired a growing interest in gardening throughout the area. Early members organized some of Ontario's first flower and horticultural shows, attracting visitors from across Wellington County to admire flowers, vegetables, plants, and garden displays. These exhibitions became important social events, bringing people together to celebrate horticulture and community spirit.

For more than 175 years, the Society has continued that tradition. While our activities have evolved over time, our purpose remains the same: to encourage a love of gardening, promote horticultural education, support environmental stewardship, and help make Elora and Salem more beautiful places to live.

Today, members participate in educational meetings, guest speaker presentations, plant sales, garden tours, community beautification projects, and volunteer initiatives throughout the year. Whether you're an experienced gardener or just planting your first flower bed, you'll find opportunities to learn, connect, and grow alongside fellow gardening enthusiasts.
